Spanish update

¡Hola!

Spanish students have a quiz tomorrow 10-17-14 on telling time using "menos".

Our first unit test is scheduled for Thursday 10-23-14.  There will be listening, reading and writing sections on the test.  Usually, there is a speaking portion, but I'm omitting it for this test.

My study advice is to make sure they know all the essential questions on the post-it note foldable.  The test will include greetings, farewells, calendar words, numbers 1-100, telling time, colors, cognates (words that look like English, but are really Spanish) and seasons.

Any questions, feel free to email me!

EXTRA study guide

Students have completed 2 of 3 sections of their final exam.  Posted on Mr. Scully's website is a supplementary study guide.  This is completely optional, and I'd love to stay 12th period on Monday or Wednesday to complete it with students.

50 multiple choice essays on Friday.

Please have a 2 liter bottle ready for Monday, June 16th

Social Studies 7 Update

Hard to believe we are talking final exam already!  On Friday we finished this year's curriculum with a visit from Abraham Lincoln himself.  We wrapped our unit on the Civil War and now are beginning the review process for our final exam.  Our final exam is next Monday 6/16, and Tuesday 6/17.  Students were given a final exam review packet which we will be working from in class.  However, it is expected that they will spend some time at home each night somehow preparing for the final exam.  Hope this helps.  Take care and have a great summer!

We are on track per my previous post. Most students did an amazing job on the menu projects with the sub last week! We are wrapping up the food unit with the Unit test, which is tomorrow.  The students have a purple review sheet to help them prepare. Attached is a calendar with assignment due dates for the remaining of the school year.

A call for help

Mr. Scully is currently in search of a plastic drum that can hold water. If you have a 30 or 55 gallon drum, with a lid, please email him at bscully@starpointcsd.org.

We are trying to grow our hydroponic vegetable garden.  In years past, the 13 gallon sterlite tub goes dry within a few days.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Re: Spanish update

Hello!

This week we finished pg.3 of our vocab sheet.

Next week we will drill the vocab from pg. 4, "er" and "ir" verbs endings and end with a vocab quiz on Friday 5-16-14.

The week of May 19th, I will be on campus, but not in class due to the NYS Course 1 LOTE Speaking exam.  With the sub that week, there will be an in class menu project and writing practice assignments instead of a speaking skit, as previously mentioned.

We will review and wrap up the unit the week of 5-26-14.  The Unit 5 test will be on 5-29-14.

Please check with your son/daughter for upcoming quizzes.  There will be at least one every week.

The 7th grade final exam has been scheduled for 6-17-14 & 6-18-14.  It will take place in class.

The speaking portion of the final exam will take place during the week of 6-9-14. Students will be assigned to take the speaking test during class, lunches, study halls or during office hours.  More details to follow as the date approaches.

Social Studies 7 Update

I wanted to keep everyone updated on the happenings in Social Studies as May begins.  Mr. Smith our student teacher wrapped up his time here earlier this week.  I was very pleased with his work and how the students responded to him as well.  We are picking up where he left off and have about a month left of new material to cover.  There will be one more assessment before our final exam in June.  Yes, that's right FINAL EXAM!  Hard to believe its creeping up on us already.  More info on that to follow.  Grades in the portal are up-to-date.  Have a good weekend!

Science Updates

As the fourth quarter kicks off, lots of excitement in F4!

First, Classification and Evolution test will be on Tuesday. Students have a study guide and picked up a review crossword puzzle on Friday in class.  It is not required but, highly recommended.

Monday is Math Monday for the entire team.  Mrs. Slack will be providing all of her core class colleagues (say that 3 times...) with a lesson to review for the state test.

Wednesday-Friday in the morning, the entire Middle School will be taking the State Math Exam.  Please get a good night's sleep and eat a strong breakfast.

Students will need a 2 liter bottle, with their name Sharpied on it, by next Friday.  They can certainly store it in Mr. Scully's room.

Permission to stay up late

As per Mr. Scully:
Watching Cosmos on Fox tonight is an acceptable reason to stay up past your bedtime. Awesome, AWESOME, show with some incredible science concepts.

This, of course, can be voided by mom at any time.

ELA Student Teacher

Dear Parents,
I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that we have a student teacher working in our class until April 29th of this semester. Mrs. Julie Ogiba is a student at Niagara University, and has begun working with the students. Together her and I are developing lessons, and I am still in the classroom at all times. As her time her progresses, I will be handing over the reins of the classroom appropriately. She is doing a great job already, and the students are receptive to her methods. Please look for a letter of introduction coming home within the next week.

Thank you and have a nice week.

P.S. Sam McGee extra credit assignments are due March 28th.

Chemistry Fashion Show

Students received their assignment today for the Chemistry Fashion show, which will take place next Thursday, March 20th

For this assignment, students need to make a vest which features any element off the periodic table. From there, they need to adorn their garment with the requirements.  They also need a piece of headwear, and a written 1 paragraph narrative.  A copy of the assignment is on Mr. Scully's webpage, and attached.

A gallery of last year's students is also on my website.

WEB Leaders

All 7th grade students are invited to apply to be a part of the 2014-2015 WEB Leaders.  Informational meetings will be held on March 27th and March 28th in F4 (Mr. Scully's room) during 7th grade lunch.

Students MUST attend one of the lunch meetings in order to pick up an application.  They will receive information about the program, the application process, and hear the mandatory dates for the upcoming school year.

The program is VERY selective about the students that are chosen based on grades, teacher recommendations, and the applications that the coordinators receive.

Any questions, have your student ask Mr. Scully or Mr. Johnson.

Science Test

Thanks and nice work to our student teacher, Miss Targus, who has been with us for the last 7 weeks! She valiantly took us through the solar system and the adventures that go with it.

As she wrapped things up before she left, we're ready to be assessed on what we've learned.  Our next science test will be on  Wednesday, March 5th

Students made a foldable in class today, and they can use it on the test if they have it filled in. A study guide also went home. I would highly recommend filling the foldable in.....

Starting Thursday, we're going to be working on the building blocks of life: Chemistry

Adjusted office hours for ELA this week

Office Hours are in Sports Study Hall this Tuesday for students who need help
Scholars has been switched from Thursday to Wednesday of this week only.
No office hours on Thursday.

Incentive Field Trip

As a celebration of a great school year together, Team Polar Bears will be taking an incentive field trip to Sky Zone on Thursday, May 22 during the school day.  Only students that fulfill the requirements outlined below will be invited to attend.

        Requirements include:

·        Students may NOT have any zeroes for assignments in the third marking period through the day of the trip. This does not include assignments past.  Some teachers allow for late work to be turned in, others do not.  Individual policies are up to the classroom teacher.

·        Students CANNOT have any written referrals for the third marking period.

·        Students may NOT miss more than 5 excused days of school for the third marking period through the day of the trip.

Students that do not meet the requirements will stay at Starpoint Middle School for the day and have a study hall in place of their core classes.

The included time frame begins today, February 4th and closes on Thursday, May 22nd.  A permission slip with a release form will be handed out as the date of the trip comes closer.  We hope this incentive of a fun day with their teachers and classmates will motivate students to do their best during the second half of the school year.  If there are any concerns or problems, please don't hesitate to contact any members of the team.

Sincerely,

Team Polar Bears Teachers

Unit 3 Spanish update.

Hello!

We started Unit 3 today.  This unit has a heavy focus on vocabulary acquisition.  Students will be drilling these verbs as vocab words.  It's simply  "pure memorization" from Spanish to English and English to Spanish .  Vocabulary sheets for the entire unit were handed out today.  Our first quiz (please check the homework link) will just focus on AR verb translations.  We will not finish this unit for about 4 weeks. Expect my next update around the end of February.

Spanish update

Hello!

We are planning  to give the unit test (House and Furniture) on 1-29-14.  Students have review notes, a practice writing assignment and a practice speaking assignment  to help them prepare for the test.  Our next unit will be "activities".  It is a lot of vocab!  We will take about a month learning how to conjugate these words.  Please check the parent portal.  It's updated.  All missing work can be completed for 1/2 credit, if needed.

Happy Friday!
